AN ASSESSMENT OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA AND ITS ROLE IN NATIONAL IMAGE BUILDING IN NIGERIA

ABSTARCT: This study was carried out on the role of electronic media in national image building using Channels Television, Lagos State. To achieve this, three significant research objectives were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of politically ambitious women in Ikeja, Lagos State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 171 respondents while 141 were received and  validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that news broadcast through electronic media have not been bias-free. The findings also revealed that the news broadcast through electronic media has always been influenced by the government.. Furthermore, the study showed that there has not been transparency in electronic media broadcast in Nigeria. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that the stakeholders in electronic media firms should maintain the standard of their operation, hence should not give room to any organization or individual to execute personal political interest. This therefore implies that the stakeholders of these of media firms must build and maintain a certain level of integrity.
